EPA Report draft:
DC’s finest Provide Security and Safety for Anacostia Kick Off Eco Tour Sergeant Joseph Perren led a group of DC bike police officers to protect the Eco Tour participants thru hazardous intersections and neighborhoods.
Dignitaries included Larry Silverman, Chairman of Montgomery County Water Quality Advisory Group and Steve Carr, noted journalist and special assistant to the Mayor of Annapolis, Barbara Klieforth, Vice President of Washington Area Bicycle Association and senior scientist at EPA and Larry Lesko of the U.S. Forest Service. Tour started at US DOT which has one of the largest Green Roofs in the US 68,000 Sq. Ft. Highlights of the eco tour included a 90 minute tour by Maggie Gessner of National Stadiums Ballpark Enterprises, a passionate and effective promoter of not only the stadium but the history and personalities of the players and franchise.
The 90 minute stadium walking tour included elements of environmental design included in the application for the first LEED certified green building for an athletic stadium. The suggestion that signage be included regarding the environmental design elements was well received. Elected Councilman for the district WARD 6, Tommy Wells, met the group at the ball park to discuss recently passed environmental legislation regarding the stadium and all Southeast riverfront development. The 15 mile eco tour included Judy’s solar home in Southeast DC, an Anacostia River Cleanup site visit Student Conservation Corps Urban Tree House in Anacostia Park, beautiful ride through DC’s SE neighborhoods to a rehabilitation activities site at Marvin Gaye Park and the inaugural plaque of Lady Bird Johnson Park, laid in 1974 to kickoff the “Keep America Beautiful” Campaign. Finally a trip back over Benning Road Bridge past the only Hydrogen fuel station in the DC area to Kingman Island and back to the beginning point where we had lunch and discussion before parting ways. A year later for another anacostia tour on April 5 2009. Big issue this year was litter removal and the first TMDL which will addresse that issue. Litter is bad no matter where it ends up...in waterways, or on the land. either way it's a health hazard and depresses property values.
